Responsive // Mark Webster logo design ideas and development

The scale of this brief is only small, and the required outcome is only a logo so it will be fast paced quick turn around, even though the deadline isn't until March 3rd I was to get used to quick paced thinking and decision making, so I can start a small brief and finish it in the same day, as my knowledge grows in specific areas of design i am gradually finding it easier to work at a quicker pace and make more important decisions instead of ambling about uming and aring.

After reading the brief and checking out Marks website as well as his other logo interests and font interests i made sure I highlighted all the main factors that were needed by this logo and just started to try and get ideas down on the page.

Luckily his initials are M, W and this will help the simplicity of the idea as each letter will be able to be mirrored and visually i think this would work really nicely on a logo. these are the initial mess around on illustrator while I was trying to get some more ideas how the M and W could work together whilst also sticking to the rest of the brief criteria.

i personally like these logos and think they could work, however i dont think they focus enough towards the natural lifestyle photography which Mark specialises in, This is a similar style logo to that I did for the ISTD Environment }Typography | Environment  brief, I really like them both so it is probably more of a personal taste and style.

This idea originated from the idea of a folded brochure or publication, which is an area that Mark supplies photography for, the incorporation of the M and W stand out nicely while creating a simple and symetrical shape which works well.

This variation i personally think is much nicer visually, but I think the legibility of the M and W are lost a little but more so i think it would be harder for an audience to relate it to his name and his profession but after seeing the logos of other photographers that he likes i am not too sure that legibility is the most important factor rather than recognisability and simplicity. So I am going to give him an option of the 2 variations, as i wouldnt be able to make that decision myself as it is not a logo representing me and my profession.

Even though I was happy with the layout of the 2 above, by adding this full stop or dot to the outside, just adds a finishing element which completes the design, it also gives a marker of what way round the logo should be, as it is symmetrical it could be rotated or mirrored and still look the same so this dot i think adds a little more personality.

Typre seemed to be an important element which he kept referring to in the brief, but as I think simplicity is what he is looking for the most, then the type i am going to put on as an optional piece, obvisouly like all logos they are a mix of visuals and type, and can both be put together or used individually depending on the context.

I tried hundreds of type layouts for this logo and could only find this layout below whichI though suited it, it was also really difficult finding a type face that suited the symbol. Mark had given links to some examples of type faces that he liked and these are the ones that coincidently produced the best results

Avril Sans

Blanch

I think Blanch with its rounded edges fits more comfortably with the layout. As i mentioned before, i think the logo works well with or without the type so it would be up to Mark whether it be incorporated, but after the winner of the brief is announced i am sure further minor adjustments will be made to get it perfect.

The final four variations that I will send to Mark, I am probably going to make a simple, single presentation board, to give him all the options in one place to asses, i may also place these logos onto his existing website just so he can see how the outcome would look.
