Design Practice 1 - Communication is a virus // Chosen box visuals

After meeting on Monday morning and presenting our individual design ideas, we all agreed that the Martin's design you can see below would offer the best visuals for the box, it creates an interesting visual pattern as well as representing an individual being separated from their friends due to lies.

The idea is,
  • The smaller diamond shapes each carry a separate name, which represents peoples friends, these are placed on the back wall of the box.
  • The large Diamond on the front represents the individual viewing the box, this will be placed on the front perspex wall of the box using transparent stickers which I used on my 100 things brief in the previous module.
When the Lie slips get deposited into the box they will cover the smaller diamonds on the back wall, leaving the representation of you, the larger diamond, left alone on the front of the box.

Revolving around the slogan, 'Lies lead to Loneliness'.

After we had made the decision we worked together on developments of the chosen visuals.

We played around with various ideas as you can see below.

We got to a point where we couldn't decide between these two options.

The first came after trying various different background colours that would suit the concept the best.
We came to the option below, whci hwe felt suited the shapes as well as attracted attention.

The second was more simple with no colour relying on pattern and text alone, however with this option it does not leave us with a choice of how to layout the diamonds, because the diamonds rely on the unity of the pattern to create a shape, we would not be able to move them apart which limits further development once the box is made.

We decided to go with the solid colour background, this is less confusing to the eye which will allow better communication.
We discussed how we could increase visual impact and Nikki suggested using foam board in the design which then developed into bringing a 3D effect into the design by mounting each small diamond on foam board, this allows them to stand out a little more as well as adding another visual element to the design.

As we were discussing what other products will be needed;

  • A banner to go above the box which would explain what it is and what you can do to get involved.
  • A Vimeo video of the box filling with slips so they can see the the full message.
  • Stickers, which will be given to any participant, this will contain the website address they can visit to view the Vimeo video.
We then assigned ourselves separate tasks,
  • I am going to work on the design for the banner to go above the box.
  • Martin is going to continue the development to the box design
  • Nathan is designing the stickers.
  • Nikki is working on the information that will be put onto the video.
