Design for Print // Print pack rear design

The more I work on this info pack, the less enthusiasm i have for any of it, it has started to become a chore and I know it is because of my design choice to put it on such large pages for my fold out info pack, i have created such hard work for myself, i also really am not happy with the design in general, I started off in a direction, and due to bad time management, it has resulted in me not having enough time to edit and adjust this pack as I would like.

my aim is to keep the design fairly basic, and focus most of it around the colour scheme, I don't want to focus that much detail onto the diagrams, so simplicity and trend is the key. However I really don't like this book anymore and I wish in all honesty that I could start again and spend a bit more time on the design development stage before making my decisions and running out of time.

Colour modes

As I am just featuring information in the pack that I would personally find useful, I have left out alot of areas i think are less important to my learning as a designer at this stage in time.

The size of the page is making it really difficult for me to place the text, because the grid I have chosen to use doesn't take into account folds in the paper, I have had to adjust copy to fit in between the columns, I know this is not the proper way and I should have done individual grids for each face of the manual. In hind site i have made so much more un enjoyable work because I haven't used a grid system in this way.

Paper sizing and Stock samples

I was trying to keep a constant theme throughout the theme of the book, it hasn't gone quite to plan but I think this part of the bok layout wise is alright.

Responsive // Bacardi Brief - Initial ideas

After initially deciding to do the Bacardi brief I quite quickly, came up with a concept that I 100% wanted to do- After researching Cuba and finding out about what is related to Cuba, I thought of, old American cars or (Yank Tanks, I thought of Revolution and I thought of Cuban Cigars. As one of the main aims of this brief is to link Bacardi back to it's Cuban Heritage Ias well as attract a young male audience I thought this concept was too good not to do.

So below you can see some initial sketches. As you can see the concept I am wanting to propose cigar box filled with test tubes filled with Bacardi, the tubes are meant to represent the cigars, the product range that could be delivered with this concept could also go far.

I will take these initial sketches to next responsive session and see what feedback i get  to see whether others think this concept is as positive as I think.

Design for Print and Web // Istd brief

Environment | Typography | Environment

Brief

Design a typographic based information piece that features typography in the environment and proves that type has an effect on it's surroundings. This can be either naturally formed or man made examples of type but they must in some way either have an effect or have absolutely no effect on the environment around it.

Photography should be incorporated into your design but does not have to be the main focus, just ensure the piece contains enough visual and theoretical information to allow the target audience  to gain a good understanding of the concept.

Considerations

Is it signage that pedestrians or drivers couldn't cope without? Or is it temporary road markings that are there to communicate a message to a certain group of individuals? It could be a shadow on the street that forms recognised letter forms. It could be anything but consider how and why it effects the surrounding environment and ensure that is clearly portrayed in you chosen product outcome.

Target Audience

Designers, Architects and Design Students as well as general typography lovers.

Tone of voice

The use of a tasteful and professional tone of voice would produce the best results, but if it contains comical or humorous aspects then this would definitely not be a negative.

Mandatory requirements
  • Research and Development
  • Strategy

Deliverables
  • Printed informational publication.

Design for web // Web design Scamp, mock up and wire frame revisions

After my crit on my existing web layout and the final web session workshop, My website was way too over complicated, there was too much colour, to much shape and too much information, I decided to adjust my idea and majorly simplify it to both aid with understanding of the concept for the audience as well as make it much easier for me to create especially with my current level of Dreamweaver skills.

Current Web layout.

Amended scamp

Navigation bar and logo will now be constant in position, when the page is scrolled all the information will travel underneath the nav bar and logo.

Scamp Layout for
  • Home page
  • History
  • Roasts

  • Atlas

Amended Wire Frame

Amended Mock up

Constant Nave bar and logo, transparent logo and text to see different visuals when scrolled over.

Transparent logo.

Transparent type on buttons.

Use of photography, to both get across the subject of the website, and to aid aesthetically. i am aiming to gather coffee based images that will also look good when viewed through the logo and button text.

Text based information will be placed relating to the image on the right hand side coaster, if more information is necessary the layout will repeat down the page.

Design Production // Design for Print - Design and content development

Print Process diagrams

I wanted to create my own personal diagrams for each print process, but not being able to photograph each printing method and not wanting to steal others photographs and diagrams, I just tried to reproduce certain diagrams I came across whilst researching which I found useful and simple to understand.

Web Offset

Offset Lithography

Rotogravure

Rotary Printing

Screen Printing

Flexography

The colour scheme chosen was to obviously link to Cyan and Magenta from the four colour process and the blurred appearance was to represent the print finish 'Over printing'. trying to create a constant grid while also avoiding the folds of the book was quite difficult

Design and layout.

I am starting to regret my choice of publication, I originally thought it would make it easier for me to create a larger folding brochure style info pack, but in all honesty i feel it has been much harder for me to work out the layout and grid as well as what information I will actually contain inside the pack, even though it is at a larger scale I think it would have been simpler for me to create a normal DPS publication so I could work out a standard grid system and just repeat through out.

Design for print // Pressision Print studio visit

A few of us organised a visit to Pressision Print in leeds to go and see a professional print studio. The have various different print processes so they can cover a wider range of print jobs from large scale and quick turn around jobs on the lithographic printers to smaller quantity more specialised prints on the large scale digital printers.

They had no minimum or maximum number of prints but the minimum fee charged would be £50

Various stocks which are available to print on using the digital print.

Below is basically a glorified photocopier, this printer produces the cheapest available prints but can print large quantities very quickly which is useful for quick turn around print jobs.

They have one lithographic printer with 6 available ink stations, generally for most print jobs there is just standard Cyan Magenta Yellow and Black but they have options available to use spot colours for certain print jobs. However I think these specific jobs would cost a larger amount as each printer would have to be cleaned of the previous CMYK inks.

A standard lithographic printing plate that is used to transfer the image to the substrate.

Inks used for lithogrphy. When we were getting our tour we were told that in certain cases they can replace any of the CMYK with the florescent equivalent, which in turn creates some really interesting printed outcomes.

They also have various finishing techniques available to clients.  including

foiling and embossing. below is a foiling plate and the printed outcome. These machines can also print large quantities at a time.

They also have machines specifically for folding and binding publications. I really didn't understand fully how these machines work but it seems that no matter the fold types or the size of the publication, it can be completed on these machines.

Design for Web // Chosen Scamp / Wire Frame / Initial digital mock up

Final Scamp

Wire Frame

I have found when thinking about web layout that it is easier to accurately measure out the layout of a website than it is for me to create an interesting layout for a printed publication. However I think if i take the concept of how you create a wire frame for a website, and incorporate it next time i work out a grid for a DPS then I think it will help me develop my grid making and layout design.

Digital Illustrator Mock-up

Having never designed or even thought about design a website prior to this module, it is an odd thing trying to think what a certain website should / could look like, while maintaining a level of appropriateness toward the topic and the target audience.

I am trying to keep it as simple as i can, because I don't want to over complicate it, all this will do is make my life harder when it comes to programming the site on Dreamweaver.

However, I am still not 100% happy with my design, as I am not sure it really looks much like a website, but at least it is a good point for me to take it to the final crit. As i could do with some feedback on whether it works as it is or if I need to change certain elements.

Website Visuals

Obviously I want to create a consistent colour scheme throughout, and again earth brown colours are the clear option to fit with coffee.
I chose a cream background as I thought this might not be quite

The imagery of the coffee ring stain will hopefully contain each uploded image, I dont think they will be colour images as this would not fit the scheme but if I duo toned photographs or created vectors of images then each one could work the same way as the stained globe at the top of the page.
