Responsive // Bacardi - Labels for Bacards

Bacard Labels

The labels need to remain consistent with the design of the box and the drink recipe book, while also capturing the visuals of cigar labels to ensure the right aesthetics are produced and the concept is understood.

After researching a large amount of cigar brands and their labels, there seem to be a broad variety of designs out their consisting of both traditional and modern designs, so I think I will be able to have quite a bit of freedom when designing whiles still maintaining the visual concept.

Having already chosen the design to be laser cut onto the lid of the box I want to try and maintain the design theme but create a modern label that will attract the young male audience.

The logo was obviously going to be the main visual element of the labels as the aim of the brief is to advertise the brand to a new audience, the logo chosen was from the 80's  and I will alter it slightly but I will use it to match the colours  and shape of the bat.

This will be a basis for the colour scheme that I will use for the label, luckily the colours that are used for the branding of Bacardi are already quite similar to many cigar labels. black and red are quite masculine colours and the yellow/gold is added to give it a elegant and quality look.

Colour scheme

Design Development.

The design process started with the logo central as it is the main feature, the side banners were then added to initially represent wings, to give the label a 'Bat Man' style look, then incorporating the colour scheme helped the design to evolve into something that wouldn't be too out of place wrapped around a cigar.

At this stage i felt that the logo was still too boring for the new exciting product that is meant to grab attention and entice new consumers.

A common thing that I found with cigar labels was the traditional elegence of gold trill around the logo or something that would be commonly found in a stately home.

I wanted to take influence from that vintage style of design but modernise it to appeal to a modern day 18-25 year old male.

I found it a little tricky to create these patterns while maintaining a masculine visual approach. I was trying to create a symmetrical pattern that could surround the edges of the banners, to capture the feeling of quality.

after playing around with these designs for a while I created this bellow which I thought both captured quality and masculinity as it also represents a chain.

The chains were then placed to represent the Bacardi Bat being constrained which also represents power, strength and attitude which are all elements that would attract the average 18 - 25 year old male.

After placing in the chains I still wasn't happy with the visuals and thought that perhaps simplicity would be the best way forward, letting the logo and colour scheme do most of the talking.

I ditched the winged banners and added more gold chains, the simplicity and space that is now provided by removing the banners helps the visuals flow much better.  However obviously the simplicity comes at a cost as there is currently no information on the labels about what they are which I would consider to be important when promoting a new product. however hopefully the product as a whole will capture the aesthetics of a cigar box so not that much explanatory information would be needed.
